The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Transportation Research Board; Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) published “ACRP Research Report 173: “Use and Potential Impacts of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) Containing per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) at Airports.” The report presented recent findings from research Dillon conducted on behalf of ACRP and identifies best management practices for managing AFFF during the operational life-cycle at airports, and best practices for addressing legacy PFAS impacts in the environment. The research involved the surveying of 167 civilian North American airports, literature review, and consultation with industry experts.
The research team also developed the Managing AFFF and PFASs at Airports (MAPA) Screening Tool to help airports identify and prioritize potential environmental liabilities and encourage the incorporation of BMPs to reduce the potential risk.
