We’re proud to announce that this year’s winner of the Dillon Consulting $5,000 SWANA scholarship winner is Tinuke Chineme from the University of Calgary.
The scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate student who is enrolled in a program which will lead to a career in solid waste management.
Dillon is proud to support the continuing education and professional development of students across Canada who are pursuing studies in its areas of practice.
Tinuke is a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental Design at the School of Architecture Planning and Landscape. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and an MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV). Her interdisciplinary research involves a closed-loop waste management system that promotes self-agency for women in low-income communities. Her current research focuses on integrating socio-economic elements like indigenous (traditional) African female-led institutions, co-production, and economic viability, in achieving and maintaining waste management improvements. The research will also provide details on the impacts of products and services on the environment, women, and their communities through LCA and S-LCA analyses. Thus developing a culturally appropriate sustainable waste management system that leverages the strengths of legacy African female institutions while economically empowering the community.
